I adore the variety of dahlia shapes, sizes, and colors. I simply can't help but try some new ones in 2024. The new dahlia varieties will all be planted at the lake.
Nineteen (was fourteen-just couldn't resist a couple more) new varieties of dahlia tubers will be arriving at my door in April and early May. I'm hoping that several become new favorites.
Along with these new varieties, I will be planting most of my saved dahlia varieties from last summer. There are a few favorites that I will be planting two or more of in the garden. (Here's looking at you, Peaches N Cream & Magenta Mystery)!
There is a certain thrill for a dahlia addict when the first bloom opens to see how a new variety looks. I have noticed that quite a few dahlias do not bloom exactly the same when planted in differing locations. The sun, soil, moisture, daylight, month, etc. all can make a difference. A number of dahlias start blooming in July or August in one set of color tones then morph into a slightly new palette in September. This seems especially common in the yellow to peach varieties that I grew. It adds to the fun.
